Travel Study in Oaxaca:

Live, Dye, & Weave with a Mexican Master

At the loom...

What to Expect
Each day is planned as half-days of textile study and half-days of cultural experiences. Time for exploring and being with local people is provided. Participate in the rich village life and family traditions of rural Mexico, as well as events in the city.

Study includes:

  • Visit to the ruins to see the inspiration for all Mexican tapestry-style rugs
  • Weaving studio classes and supplies to make a small personal tapestry sample (they prepare the warp for you)
  • Dye studio classes to learn about traditional Mexican and contemporary natural-dye techniques
  • Trip to mountains to collect dye plants
  • English language tours to local sites (churches, ruins, museums, markets, wood craving and pottery studios)

Language
Once you arrive at Demetrio's home, you will be with English speakers most of the time. Demetrio and Maribel speak good English, as does David Sanchez, who will be our driver. Your group leader speaks intermediate Spanish. If you speak Spanish, you will have ample opportunities to practice.
